Summer Intensive 2017 Programme

July 17 - 19 Yael Flexer (Flexer & Sandiland

Each day will start with a dynamic release based class. Focusing on skeletal connections and imagery to find an ease and flow of movement classes begin with short improvisations and move on to formal exercises that build towards driving movement sequences. Emphasis is placed on momentum, inversion and an expansive use of space combined with core strength.

After a short break, we will continue by learning segments from the company's repertoire, and develop these through choreographic tasks, simulating the  way in which Yael develops material. Yael's work is driven by fast-paced movement, intricate patterning and tight choreographic structure whilst also reflecting on the overlapping between performance and the everyday.

Directed by award-winning choreographer Yael Flexer and installation artist Nic Sandiland, Flexer & Sandiland create live and digital installation work (for theatres, galleries, screens and large outdoor spaces), alongside an extensive programme of commissions and tailormade training for youth and community groups and professional development settings.

July 20 -21 Antonia Grove (Probe Project)

Antonia's workshop will be focusing on generating movement using improvisation and more dance theatre orientated gameplay. Antonia is particularly interested in the integration of text within dance and the devising process, and in the workshop she will introduce ways of integrating voice with movement.

Antonia Grove has worked with many of the leading dance companies in the UK. Artistic director of Probe, her current work focuses on collaboration and the use of dance, text and song to communicate or tell a story. Antonia regularly teaches professional companies and provides mentoring and dramaturgy assistance to dance artists.

July 24 - Ben Duke (Lost Dog)

Ben Duke's workshop will be giving an opportunity to explore Lost Dog’s unique approach to creating dance theatre. He will lead a creative session looking at how we can move with a sense of game and  spontaneity.

Ben is Artistic Director of Lost Dog. He trained at the Guildford School of Acting, London Contemporary Dance School and has a first class degree in English Literature from Newcastle University. As well as his creations for Lost Dog, Ben has been commissioned to create work for various dance and theatre companies in the UK. As a performer he has worked with Probe, Hofesh Shechter Company, Tilted Productions, The Gate Theatre, The National Theatre of Scotland, Glyndebourne Opera and Punchdrunk.

July 25 - Charlotte Spencer (Charlotte Spencer Projects)

In her choreographic work Charlotte looks to question ideas about journey, presence and time and to invite people to re-encounter themselves in relationship to their lives and their environment. In this workshop, Charlotte will lead a series of creative tasks where participants experiment with choreographic tools that shape and manipulate spaces using the physical body.

As artistic director of Charlotte Spencer Projects she works across art forms and predominantly in outdoor environmental contexts. With the contribution of many remarkable artists, Charlotte creates choreographic experiences, curates events, gives talks, collaborates, disrupts and questions, takes dance onto bike tours, and is endlessly making maps.

July 26 - Ceyda Tanc (Ceyda Tanc Dance)

The workshop will incorporate dynamic contemporary dance with traditional Turkish folk dance, the dance style of Tanc’s heritage. Utilising virtuoso movements of the Turkish dance styles, a unique movement vocabulary is created, which conveys striking shapes, and an emotive and sensual energy. In the workshop Ceyda will introduce elements from her repertoire.

After graduating from the University of Roehampton with a BA Dance Studies in 2011, Ceyda was invited to spend four months at The State Turkish Conservatoire for Music and Folk Dance in Izmir to train in traditional Turkish folk dance, including Zeybek and Denizli, the dance styles of her heritage. In 2012, Ceyda founded Ceyda Tanc Dance, creating a body of contemporary dance works with influences from Turkish folk culture. Her work has been shown at numerous platforms and festivals across the UK. Ceyda is an Associate Lecturer at The University of Chichester.

July 27 - 28 - Chloe Hernandez & Orin Camus (Cie Yma)

Based on their latest production Les Petitions du Corps, the duo will introduce some of their working methods, which aims at developing and heightening the dancers' sensory awareness. In the workshop we will focus on engaging with the floor and managing weight, as well as engaging with one another through touch. They will also introduce their methods of embodying musicality, in a manner which is inspired by hip hop.

Chloé and Orin both trained dancers at the Conservatoire National de Toulouse, then at The Centre National de Danse Contemporaine in Angers. Subsequently they worked for choreographers Paco Decina and Valery Riviere. They have been making their own work since 2010 under the company name Yma. Chloé and Orin teach in various settings, as well as offer professional workshops in street dance (hip hop) and partnering.

Accomodation: If coming from outside of Brighton, there may be a possibility to be hosted by a local dancer in their home. Otherwise there are many AirB&B options.

The course is offered in collaboration with Dance in English.
